What is A.O.? Under the umbrella of Upper Cervical Care there are 5 different techniques. Atlas Orthogonal is one of the 5 and the one that Dr. Mejias specializes in. A.O. is a very gentle, very precise procedure for removing nervous system interference from your body without manipulation. An A.O. adjustment is tailored specifically to your individual misalignment, and the correction is mathematically calculated for optimum results. Why is the Atlas important to you? It is important because of its anatomical location. The Atlas is the vertebra that holds your head and is located at the point where your brain stem turns into the spinal cord. Therefore even a small misalignment can interfere with the nerve impulses from your brain to your body and, with the blood flow, via the vertebral arteries, to the brain. When the normal transmission of brain messages to the affected part of the body is restored the natural healing process can begin. This is why we see so many different conditions responding to the same procedure. How does this affect the rest of my spine and body? Because the Atlas is the first vertebra in the spine a misalignment there may cause a chain reaction throughout the rest of the spine and body. As a result, one may be suffering from low back pain, sciatica, or shoulder pain that originated from an Atlas misalignment. This is known as Body Imbalance. Why might the Atlas be misaligned? The upper cervical area is the only location in the spine that does not include discs. As a result of this we are able to have a great deal of mobility for moving our head and neck through its range of motion. The tradeoff is that we give up stability for mobility. What is the difference between this procedure and traditional chiropractic, and what can I expect? The main difference is that this procedure does not require or include forceful manipulation of any kind. Which means that there is no snap, crackle, or pop of any kind. If your health history, and examination indicate that you may be helped with this procedure then Dr. Mejias will take a set of specialized films used to determine the exact degree of misalignment of your Atlas. The adjustment can best be described as a very gentle, mathematically pre-determined direction of pressure applied to the first bone in the neck. When a correction is made the muscles begin to relax, blood and oxygen circulation is increased to the brain, and the body’s natural healing process begins. The objective is to make a correction, and then help the patient maintain the correction so he /she can enjoy a better quality of life free from pain. Occupational Health Services The most recent survey from The Kaiser Family Foundation released on September 27, 2011 indicates a 9% rate increase in health insurance premiums. This expense is of course shared with the already overburdened employer. Some employers have turned to chiropractic to contain costs. With a little insight into your specific problem we can tailor a solution specifically for you!
